M3U is just a playlist format — the actual protocol depends on the stream URLs. M3U8 typically points to HLS (HTTP Live Streaming), which is chunked, adaptive, and browser-friendly. TS URLs in an M3U usually refer to MPEG-TS streams over UDP or HTTP — lower latency but more fragile.
